Palm Pre, The Real iPhone Competitor

หลังจากรอกันมานานมากๆ กับ Palm ซึ่งเป็นผู้บุกเบิก PDA สมัยแรกๆ ซึ่งหยุดพัฒนามือถือ Treo ที่เป็นที่นิยมมากๆในยุคนั้น แต่การรอคอยครั้งนี้เรียกได้ว่าคุ้มค่า การเปิดตัวมือถือตัวใหม่ Palm Pre เรียกได้ว่าสมราคา น่าจะทำให้ iPhone ร้อนๆหนาวๆได้เหมือนกัน รีวิวในเมืองนอกค่อนข้างเป็นบวกกับมือถือตัวนี้มากๆ ลองมาดูกันว่าเป็นยังไง

ในการเปิดตัวครั้งนี้ ทั้ง Hardware และ Software ยังไม่ใช่ final versions ยังอาจจะมีการปรับและพัฒนาให้ดีทีสุดก่อนออกขายอีกครั้ง ก็ต้องคอยติดตามไป แต่เมืองไทยคงต้องรอกันเหมือนเดิม เพราะนี่แค่เปิดตัวในอเมริกาเท่านั้น ก็คงต้องไปเดินหากันตามมาบุญครองถ้าสนใจ

Software

เนื่องจากผ่านการวางแผนและพัฒนามานาน user interface (UI) ของ Palm Pre จัดได้ว่าทำได้ดีกว่ามือถืออื่นๆ เ่ช่น Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 ,Nokia N97 หรือ Google G1 และบางทีอาจจะดีกว่าไอโฟนด้วยซ้ำ สามารถทำงานแบบ multitasking ได้ด้วย ต่างจากไอโฟนที่บางโปรแกรมเท่านั้นที่ทำได้แต่ส่วนใหญ่จะทำไม่ได้ ทำให้การทำงานหลายๆอย่างพร้อมกันนั้น สะดวกมากยิ่งขึ้น UI แบบใหม่ที่ทาง ปาล์มคิดขึ้นเรียกว่า Card ซึ่งคล้ายๆกับ Safari ใน iPhone ทีสามารถเลือกสลับไปมาระหว่างหน้าได้ โดยที่ Card จะสลับไปมาระหว่างโปรแกรมโดยที่โปรแกรมยัง active อยู่ (web ใน Safari จะเป็นแค่ screen capture เท่านั้น) นอกจากนี้ในส่วนต่างๆของตัว OS ก็ถูกคิดมาอย่างดีให้สามารถใช้งานได้ง่าย เช่นเวลาคุณโทรศัพท์อยู่ ก็สามารถเปิดดูหน้า contact ได้เลย และในหน้านั้นก็จะมี GoogleTalk และ Facebook ให้คุณเลือก chat ได้เพียงแค่กดปุ่มๆเดียวเท่านั้น ตัว browser ก็อยู่บนพื้นฐานของ Webkit ซึ่ง render หน้าเวป แสดงผล และการ scroll เร็วกว่า browser ยี่ห้ออื่นรวมทั้ง Mobile Safari

Hardware

ตัวเครื่องค่อนข้างเบา และจัดว่าบางเมื่อเทียบกับมือถือแบบ slide อื่นๆ แต่หนากว่า iPhone แน่นอน โดยปุ่มต่างๆจะอยู่โดยรอบเครื่อง ที่พิเศษจะมีปุ่ม track ball คล้ายๆกับ Google G1 และ Blackberry ซึ่งค่อนข้างเล็ก แต่ด้วยความที่ OS มีการใ้ช้ gesture ต่างๆ ทำให้การใช้งาน track ball ลดลง โดย Palm ได้เพิ่มส่วน gesture bar ซึ่งอยู่ใต้หน้าจอลงมา ซึ่งจะช่วยในการควบคุมมือถือให้สามารถใช้งานแบบมือเดียวได้อย่างสะดวก เหมือนมือถือ Treo ที่เน้นการใช้งานมือเดียว ตัวเครื่องทั้งหมดรวมทั้งหน้าจอดูกลมกลืนกันทั้งหมด หน้าจอสว่างและชัดเจน อาจจะมี glare บ้างถ้าใช้งานในที่แสงสว่างมากๆ ปุ่มกดบนหน้าจอต่างๆใหญ่กดได้ง่าย ตัว keyboard คล้ายกับ Centro และ Treo Pro แต่จะคล้ายกับ Pro มากกว่า โดยตัวคีย์จะห่างกว่าและใหญ่กว่า พิมพ์ได้ง่าย ที่พิเศษอีกอย่างก็คือ คุณสามารถชาร์จไฟแบบ “ไร้สาย” ได้ โดยต้องซื้อตัว Touchstone ซึ่งเป็นอุปกรณ์เสริม สามารถเปลี่ยนแบตเตอรี่ได้อีกด้วย กล้องก็อยู่ในระดับเท่าไป เทียบเท่ากับมือถืออื่นๆพร้อมกับ flash แบบ LED แล้วก็มี accelrometer ซึ่งใช้ในการพลิกหน้าจอ คล้ายๆกับมือถือคู่แข่งตัวอื่นๆ

ดูรวมๆแล้ว เรียกได้ว่า iPhone ขาดอะไร Palm Pre ก็เติมเต็มในจุดนั้น ใครที่ไม่ชอบ iPhone ไม่ว่าจะเป็นเรื่องของการใช้งาน หรือฟังชั่นที่ขาดไป ก็น่าจะเป็นหนึ่งในเป้าหมายของ Palm Pre นอกจากนี้ ความสามารถในการดึงข้อมูลจาก web services ต่างๆมารวมอยู่ในโปรแกรมต่าง ทำให้การใช้งานง่ายขึ้นเยอะ เช่นคุณสามารถใช้ GoogleTalk และโปรแกรม IM อื่นๆได้ในหน้าเดียวกันทำให้สะดวกมากๆ ไม่ต้องเปิดหลายๆโปรแกรม สลับหน้าจอไปมา หรือการ search ข้อมูลนั้น สามารถดึงข้อมูลมาที่มือถือได้โดยไม่ต้องเปิดหน้าจอ browser เลย กล้องที่ดีกว่ากล้องมือถือทั่วไป เพราะมีการทำ image post processing โดยโปรแกรมกล้องถ่ายรูป

spec คร่าวๆ ถ้าคุณชอบเปรียบเทียบ spec ก่อนเลือกซื้อมือถือ จัดว่าใช้ได้เลยทีเดียว

Analyst Reaction
Wall Street investment firm Needham’s Charlie Wolf saw the webOS as a return to Palm’s “software roots” and also praised the Pre, writing, “Give credit where credit is due. With its new operating system and smartphone, Palm lives to fight another day.”

Wolf sees Palm targeting the mobile phone customer who hasn’t yet bought a smartphone but wants one.

“Palm is not going after RIM in email or the iPhone in multimedia,” he wrote.

Predicting 1.25 million sales in FY2010, Wolf wrote, “The biggest initial negative is that the Palm Pre will only run on the fast fading Sprint network in the U.S.”

He allowed the 1.25 million estimate could be “dramatically” low if other carriers end up selling the phone.
